FatalFatalFatalFatalEMS  10/30/05: China — 4 die in tower crane collapse

A TOWER crane collapse killed four men and left another one seriously injured in the Man Autonomous County of Qingyuan, Liaoning Province, a newspaper said yesterday.

This is the 30th AVOIDABLE incident reported to this site this year in which power lines were involved. There were 41 incidents reported to this site in 2004, 60 in 2003, 33 in 2002 and 35 in 2001. Again, all were avoidable. Just don't work cranes near energized power lines.

Power line contact is the most frequent cause of crane accidents, yet they are the easiest to prevent. LOOK up and live!

Reports of Similar Incidents

Typical sing-song of contractors and government bureaucrats. Believe them if you want to. I don't.

A quote from the article: “Clyde Payne, area director for the OSHA office in Jackson, said Yates Construction Co., which is building a parking garage at East Pascagoula and South West streets, erected a tower crane on East Pascagoula. Held up with a concrete base and reinforced with bolts, the electrically operated crane is counterbalanced to keep it from toppling.”
Editoral Comment: The above statement is NOT TRUE! The crane will topple if overloaded. In addition, there are numerous other conditions, such as high winds, mechanical failure, and operator error that can cause the crane to topple. Verifiable proof is available throughout this site. --D. Peeks
