* 09/28/03: Greenville, South Carolina — Industrial accident kills Asheville man

A 38-year-old Asheville man, Carl Keith Hall, died Friday after a tire — weighing as much as 2,000 pounds — that he was moving fell on him at a Taylors industrial site, a deputy coroner said.

Hall, who was employed by TCI Tire Center in Duncan, was moving the tire with a boom truck at Hanson Materials of 402 Keller Road, Ellis said.

“It appears the tire came loose from the piece of equipment it was being lifted with,” he said. Hall was pinned between the tire and the piece of equipment, he said.

A 30-metre crane narrowly missed crushing a group of young children in a nursery yesterday when it toppled over in Bangkok's Chom Thong district, police said.

No one was injured in the incident.

A crane that fell during construction work at a railway station was caught by an electric power line below and barely avoided crushing buildings Monday, police said Tuesday.

Police say there may have been a technical problem with a crane that toppled over and crushed a man on Auckland's North Shore.

A 61 year old Downer Construction worker was killed Tuesday morning when a crane boom fell on him at the Mairangi Bay site where a UV plant to treat water was being built.

Construction accident victim was Waterloo man

We've recorded 111 deaths for 2003 of which 44, (about 40 percent) were power line related.

I often wonder if the powers that be ever take a serious look at those numbers. O.S.H.A., and others, are currently in a big pow-wow about changing some existing crane related regulations. I wonder why they don't jump on what is killing the highest number of people. Is it because it makes sense or is the most logical place to start?

Jacksonville, Florida — 09/05/03: Crane collapsed into several parked cars

The crane was stretched out on the ground with it's wheels 50 feet into the air. A car was flattened by the fall.

* Nashville, Tennessee — 09/04/03: Crane operator killed

One man was killed Thursday when a crane tipped over at an industrial site in West Nashville.

Metro police have identified the victim as 51-year-old Arthur Ricks of Nolensville. At 6:30 am the 25-ton crane that Ricks was operating was moving a chute from the end of a dock when the crane slip and overturned. Ricks was freed from the cab and was rushed to St. Thomas Hospital, where he later died.

Jeffrey Rogers' Wednesday morning started like most others, but it went downhill fast from there.

Rogers was driving a large mobile crane to Cooperstown on his way to the site of the new Meadows complex south of the village when the vehicle lost its brakes coming down the Glen Avenue/Route 28 hill toward the T-intersection at Chestnut Street.

A worker died at a Staten Island dry dock Wednesday afternoon when a 60-foot crane collapsed onto him, according to the fire department.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, was working at the Caddell dry dock on Richmond Terrace when the crane toppled onto him, said Firefighter Jack Thompson, a fire department spokesman.

The cause of the collapse was under investigation, Thompson said.

It is reported that a specialized crane used to move and disassemble the pieces had a malfunction (mechanical failure) in the hoist's hydraulic system as it was lifting the missile section out of the silo.

The incident occurred on late Tuesday night when Simran Ghosh (30) was mechanically lifting containers onto a trailer and the grip of the crane gave way, leading to one of the containers falling on the cabin where he was sitting.

Five workers died when they were electrocuted as the arm of their mechanical crane grazed high-tension wires in Shijiazhuang in northern China, state media reported today.

A 48-ton crane toppled over onto a roundabout on the A631 west of Gainsborough.

Nobody was believed to be injured in the incident, which took place at around 7.15am today near Beckingham.

Stunned motorists, who were passing as the Ainscough rental crane fell over, heard a load crash and many slowed to see what had happened.

Jim King was using a crane to help erect a light pole near McCoy and Venuti drives, near Westfield Shoppingtown Fox Valley, when the two pins holding the two parts of the counterweight in place broke, according to city officials. A portion of the weight fell from about 50 feet, striking Jim's head.

09/01/03: San Francisco, California — A construction worker at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco survived a 60-foot fall Wednesday.

Witnesses say the worker was on top of a crane when it tipped over during repairs on a parking facility at Mason and Jefferson. Rescuers had to pull the victim out of the wreckage, but his injuries were reportedly not life threatening.

Cal-OSHA is investigating the cause of the accident.
