While working on a railroad expansion here Thursday, a Hereford man was injured when a crane became entangled with power lines. Roberts County Sheriff's Deputy Rick Smithey said that around 11 a.m., Anthony Abeyta, 19, working for Messer Construction of Hereford, was unloading concrete railroad ties from a work train to the new rail bed using a link-belt crane. When workers raised the crane, the boom got into some power lines above the crossing on North Main Street and Railroad Avenue, Smithey said. Abeyta was holding onto the clamps on the rail tie and suffered electrical shock. He was conscious with burns to his hands and feet, Smithey said, and was flown by Lifestar to University Medical Center. Abeyta was the only one injured in the accident, Smithey said. Xcel Energy officials arrived on the scene to check the lines, and Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad officials shut the site down for the day, Smithey said.
