| Dead Link | A boom from a crane truck knocked down overhead lines and caused a small fire and power outage in Rancho Penasquitos today, authorities said. The boom hit the power lines about 10:40 a.m. at 12350 Black Mountain Road, a San Diego Fire Department dispatcher said. No one was injured, but a small fire broke out under the power lines, possibly fed by spilled fuel, a dispatcher said. Electrical service to the neighborhood was interrupted, said Anne Silva of San Diego Gas & Electric. This is the 38th. | 08/26/03: Portsmouth, Virginia — Crane Working on Pinners Point Project Collapses | Cache Copy | A 200-ton crane helping to build the West Norfolk Bridge on Highway 164 in Portsmouth partially collapsed Tuesday afternoon, knocking six concrete girders into the water. Officials say the crane was on a one-foot-thick wooden mat, setting the concrete girders into place on the Pinners Point Project, when one of the crane's tracks slipped around 1:45pm. This sent the crane's boom across the span, knocking the girders down. Photos (3) |
| 08/25/03: Texoma, Oklahoma — Bridge Blocked by Downed Crane Motorists using the Highway 25 bridge over Beaver Creek near FM 367 should have been driving over the new bridge there tongiht. Unfortunately the delays and detours will last a bit longer. A huge crane picking up the concrete traffic lane barriers toppled onto the semi truck it was loading them onto shortly after 8am this morning. No one was injured, but the one lane open to traffic had to be closed. Work on the bridge which started in October is complete and they hope to have the crane removed by tonight and traffic on the new bridge open by tomorrow morning. |

| Cache Copy | A well-drilling rig hit a high-voltage power line at a construction site, killing a father and son, authorities said. Martin Schafer, 49, and his 24-year-old son, Benjamin, died in the Friday evening accident at the Mount Pocahontas housing development, according to the Carbon County coroner's office. Their rig tilted on soft ground, causing it to hit the power line, police said. Colleagues said the hardworking pair were trying to finish a job after working all day. This is the 35th.
