| This happened on 6/16/03 at an apartment construction project in Houston,
Texas. They are constructing a 6 floor concrete parking garage first. A tower
boom crane is setup adjacent to the garage and moves along a rail track. The crane is a Terex Peiner SMK 308. Due to heavy rains a portion of one of the rail tracks had been removed to fill in under it because it was sinking. This shortened track had not been blocked off. I was told, but I can not confirm this as true, that a supervisor was operating the crane at the time, and that he was not certified on it. You can guess what happened next, he just drove the crane right of the track. It leaned into the new garage structure which kept it from falling down completely. Nobody was hurt. The pictures I'm sending are after they had brought in another crane to hold it up. They removed the counterweights and righted the fallen crane back onto the track. I was told the crane was not damaged badly and they will continue to use it once it been checked over. |
