May 9, 2000: Chicago, Illinois — A crane collapsed this evening at a downtown Chicago construction site, killing one worker and injuring two others, authorities said. The dead worker was found at the bottom of a shaft at the site where a high-rise is being constructed, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Will Knight said. Police said the crane fell two stories inside the building around 6:30 p.m. in the Streeterville neighborhood, just east of the city's Magnificent Mile shopping district. Knight said one injured worker was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition and the other was treated at the scene. A hospital spokeswoman didn't immediately return a phone message.
